With the: Word Fabricio Werdum

Werdum 2009 ADCC Werdum 2009 ADCC

Only a few days after he shocked the World with his submission victory over what is widely considered the best fighter in the World, Fabricio Werdum spoke with Kid Peligro. Having followed him for quite some time both in victories and few defeats I can atest that Fabricio is an exemplary person who has always remained focused on his objectives and has dedicated and sacrificed for his success. Even after defeting Fedor Emelianenko by submission in just over one minute Fabricio remais the same, humble and focused as he says: "Fedor is still the best!"

Check out below his interview:

KP-How was your preparation for this fight?

Fabricio Werdum - Marcio "Macarrao" gets Red/Black - Marcelo Garcia in Action free

Congratulations go to Marci "Macarrao" Strambovski on reaching the Red and Black Belt Level. "Macarrao", one of the few Rolls Black belts received the honor from Carlos Gracie Jr.

Fabricio Werdum shocks the World

But not his fans . . . Big congratulations to two times ADCC Champion Fabricio Werdum for his great submission victory over the arguably best fighter in the World. Besides being a truly great guy, Werdum is a World BJJ Champion and ADCC Champion. While to many his submission came as a surprise, many others that know him and his high level BJJ were predicting this outcome, if he was able to successfully take the fight to the ground. Those who have followed him since blue belt knew what he was capable of, Werdum did just that and submitted Fedor via triangle choke in just over 1 minute into the first round.

The Jiu-Jitsu World is proud and happy to have him as a representative. Congratulations and it couldn't happen to a better guy!

Mendes Brothers Talk - Malaysia BJJ Update

When the Mendes brothers talk people listen so here is a communique from them:

"A few days of Mundials has finished, we are in LA in the house of our friend, resting our body and mind. We are waiting for the start of seminars which this time will be from America to Canada. We miss our house, we speak many times each day with our family through radio, calling our family makes us even more miss them. But at the same time, we are extremely happy that we are able to do what we love and extremely grateful that we see people are interested in learning more about our experiences and our details. Thank God we are reaping good fruits. We decided not to train this week and maybe not to train next week. We need to definitely get the rest we deserve, we haven’t rested for years, training every day and living to be a champion. We are very happy for this life, but we decided to rest this 2 weeks to restore our bodies and to be able to return training.

The "R's" are getting together - Rolker Camp in Rio - Limao Seminar in San Diego

Once in a while the planets align just right and things that previously seemed impossible happens. Recently the planets may have done just that as Professor Pedro Sauer seems on the verge of achieving what many thought was impossible: Get most of Helio Gracie's sons together in a major project! While details and the final objective are still a partially guarded secret I can tell you the goals of the project are very ambitious, including but not limited to dissiminate the vision and objectives of Grandmaster Helio Gracie with the full support of his sons.

Stay tuned for more details in the next few weeks as this solidifies and more info is released

Worlds 2010: The good and the bad. CheckMat Black Belt dies in motorcycle accident

Worlds 2010 Random Thoughts: The good and the bad!

The good:

- IBJJF Organization keeps getting better and better. The event ran as smooth as ever despite the high number of competitors

- Competitors are getting better at all levels especially purple and brown.

- If anyone doesn't think Roger Gracie is the best of the decade they're watching something different than I or they're not paying attention. Not only he has been in 8 consecutive Absolute finals taking 3 of them, but 7 weight titles as well! Roger doesn't usually just win, he wins decisively submitting most of his opponents. Overheard from a few of his opponents and coaches: "He is just impossible" . . . "at a different level" . . . "his Jiu-Jitsu is different than ours". And to boot the kid is humble! IT is great to have him represent our sport!

- Alliance Team is the best no question! Romero "Jacare", his General Fabio Gurgel and his top instructors Alexandre "Gigi" and too many others to name have rebuild the team that once split into a powerhouse of domination not seen in a long time. Not only they took the team title, but also the ladies title and had a winner or a medal in just about every Black Belt category. (read more)

The bad:

- I had to wait a few days to digest this one but many of matches this year were less exciting than last year. And I thought last year was an off year. In many of the matches competitors are fighting for the slightest differences the result is that matches end up tied forcing the refs to make numerous decisions. These are very good, some even great fighters, that are so intent on winning that they are going away from their nature. Where is the "go for it" spirit? Where is the "I'm going to submit you" attitude? Where are the attacking fighters going for the kill? Where is the spirit that created idols, that got us excited to go to watch the Worlds so we would witness epic battles? It seemed in this year's Worlds that a lot of competitors were playing for a 1/8 of an advantage win rather than imposing their will and going for the kill!

And this is not just my opinion as many of the experts, reporters, coaches and even competitors that I spoke with concurred. Xande Ribeiro has a very good piece about this on his blog:  (read more)

CheckMat Black Belt dies in motorcycle accident:

Worlds 2010 Sunday : Great finish but some disappoitnments

The greatest BJJ Show on earth is over with a bang and a whimper, a bang as many of the top and new up and comers got their titles, favorites like Roger Gracie, Marcelo Garcia, Bruno Malfacine, Rafael Mendes, Michel Langhi did their part and got their Gold. Newcomers and top fighters Bernardo Faria, Rodrigo Cavaca and Tarsys Humphries got their Gold as well. Ladies winners were Leticia Ribeiro, Bianca Barreto, Kyra Gracie, Hillary Williams, Michelle Nicollini and Gabrielle Garcia.

The whimper was due to both Absolute finals not taking place, in hte ladies side Alliance closed out the bracket with Gabrielle Garcia and Luana Alzuguir and the duo decided for Luana. In the men's side, an unfortunate injury to Romulo Barall (blown knee) kept him from facing Roger in the finals. Roger did his part, weight and absolute titles all but one win by submission, he becomes the first person to win the title 3 times and is the best BJJ competitor in the World bar none!

Alliance won its fifth Team title!

Full report and more in the next few days

Worlds 2010 Saturday: Oh what a day it was

There is a new crew of BJJ'ers coming up and making everyone take notice while some of the older guys are still performing great. In perhaps the hardest division of the Black Belt, the middleweight, Marcelo Garcia was in form submitting his opponents, Sergio Moraes advanced on his side of the bracket and will face Kron tomorrow in the quarters. Kron seemed to be the same eKron of the brown belt with laser beam attacks as he submitted his two opponents including veteran star Delson Pe de Chumbo. Kayron Gracie did his part also submitting his opponents. Calasans, Lucas Leite, Bill Cooper all advancing in solid fashion. Feather weight sCobrinha, Rafa Mendes and Ryan Hall are on collision course while JT Torres will face Gilbert Durinho and the returning Celsinho faces Frazatto. Too many other weights to address but in my view perhaps the biggest disappointment of today was that Xande lost to Romulo Barral depriving everyone of a battle of titans between the winners of the last 4 absolute titles. Romulo Barral put an end to that with a brilliant performance in the absolute earning him the 3 finals against Roger.

Sorry for the ramble but it was a long day

See you tomorrow
