Braulio Estima: Life after ADCC 2011

Braulio Estima was always a top notch fighter, I should know as I've followed his career since the early days. It was always great to watch and photograph his fights as he had a penchant for doing some high amplitude sweeps on his opponents and I had more than my share of photos of those moments. But despite his great results and titles Braulio still seemed to be searching for more, and to become better. He was never satisfied with what he conquered and always wanted more. Braulio came into his own in Barcelona during ADCC 2009 when he put on a show and won the weight and absolute. From then on Braulio dedicated himself to furthering his game even more and to his academy and students. This past September, Braulio fought the ADCC Superfight against one of his nemesis, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. In one great match, in front of his family and hometown students and fans Braulio came out on top. He now has his sights set on another Superfight against current Absolute Champion Andre Galvao. We wanted to know what's up with the ADCC Champion:

6th Annual LX Association Gathering

Andre Galvao ADCC World weight and Absolute Champion


Andre Galvao celebrates

Andre Galvao is not  anew name, he has been a start since his blue belt years. His performances as purple and brown winning hte weight and absolute int he Worlds were always phenomenal. His Gold in the Worlds in 2008 marked the top of his competition career to that point. He then went of to compete in MMA, but after a while the call of the BJJ and Grappling mats spoke and soon he was back to where he belonged. After two close calls in ADCC '07 where he took 3rd in the weight and Absolute and '09 where he was second to Braulio Estima in the Under 88kg, Andre came back in 2011 with a vengeance and took both titles in a great display of technique and determination. So here we have Andre Galvao, Absolute and U88KG champion, best fighter award and best match award in ADCC 2011!

ADCC President Marko Leisten Talks about ADCC and its expansion

ADCC has been on a expansion mode the last few years and it only seems to be picking up steam. With the great success of the 2011 event in Nottingham, England and now events in Finland, Franca (Paris) and Russia, the Worldwide expansion is in full force. Marko is no newcomer to ADCC, having been a part of the event in some form or another since the early days. Born and raised in Finland, Marko is a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has a series of Academies in Scandinavia. He is a serious and straight forward person who tells you like it is and what he is thinking. His style is very direct and that sometimes startles people but he is also fair and supports his people 110%. His associates all swear by him and are loyal to a fault. (read more)

This past Saturday, Gracie Humaita Association held its first annual Association Tournament. The event had around 250 participants from schools from around the Country. Instructors from the West Coast also came for their annual instructor's meeting. UFC No Mercy - A great milestone and a new champ

Just a few days ago Keith Mills wrote a great article about this UFC calling it a true milestone (Read the article http://www.adcombat.com/news/2011-11-11/ufc-fox-true-milestone ) . Here are my thoughts after this historic event:

By all accounts this was truly a breakthrough. A few years ago when the Fertita brothers bought the UFC, their first show was, in my eyes a disaster, and I remember at the time thinking: "I hope these guys can save this but it looks bad". Well years later, the Fertita brothers along with Dana White and their cast of fighters have brought UFC to the pinnacle of the sport, with a heavyweight championship fight live on network TV. The fight was explosive and dramatic with new Champion Junior Dos Santos KO'ing defending Champion Cain Velasquez in little more than a minute. While many may have been disappointed it (read more)

Another edition of the Worlds No Gi BJJ went down this past Saturday. The event broke all previous records of attendance and participation. The IBJJF had 12 rings going full force all day with too many great matches happening at the same time. Notably the level of No Gi competition has skyrocketed in the last few years, partly because of these IBJJF tournaments and of course mainly because of the proliferation of Submission Wrestling tournaments especially ADCC trials everywhere.

Royce Gracie Benefit Seminar


Royce Gracie Seminar to benefit local boy’s soccer team.

When: Lomita, California  December 3&4, 2011

Royce Gracie, 3 time UFC champion and MMA Hall of Famer, announces seminar to benefit local boy’s non-profit soccer team. Saturday December 3rd and Sunday December 4th. Royce will be at the Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu network in Lomita for two days of seminars taught by the legend himself.

Saturday’s classes include kid’s self defense from 1:00pm-2:30pm, 3:00pm-5:00pm adult’s self defense and a meet & greet from 5:00pm-6:00pm to have autographs signed and photos taken. Sunday’s seminar includes a self defense/ jiu-jitsu class from 10:00 am-11:30 am for children ages 11-15.  From 12:00pm-2:00pm Royce will teach a Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu technique class for adults. The day will end with a MMA adult seminar from 4:00pm-6:00pm. In addition to the RGJJ seminars, James Strom, former USC strength coach and professional athletic trainer will offer a one hour circuit training workout from 2:30pm-3:30pm on Sunday. There will be door prizes, raffles and a silent auction. Seminar prices are $25.00 for circuit training classs,$35.00 per class for children, $50.00 per class for adults. Spectators are welcome to observe any seminar for a $5.00 fee.

Royce is donating 100% of all proceeds from this event to the Exiles Black boys U-15 soccer team.  The Exiles Soccer Club is a non-profit youth athletic organization that was founded in 1976 in the South Bay. The club is committed to providing a safe and highly competitive soccer program for a diverse group of youth. All revenue generated from this event will help fund scholarships, uniforms and travel throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Leo Vieira Promotes Sweden's First Female Black Belt

Leo Vieira is touring Europe and while in Denmark Leo promoted a few Black Belts, including Ida Hansson, who has the honor of being Sweden/Denmark's first female Black Belt. Along with Hansson also promoted were Alexander Trans, and Shanti Abelha all three are from Checkmat Denmark under Professor Shimom Moshizuki. Congratulations to the trio on the promotion.
