I was fortunate enough to attend a Mauli Ola Foundation Fundraiser yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort. With great talent performing like my nephews Makua Rothman, Gavin Garcia and legendary surfer/musician Titus Kinimaka and Keone, the fundraiser was "the gathering place" for the North Shore and present were many of the local and international top dogs and personalities. With each entrance ticket you got a chance to a win the grand prize: a stand up paddle board donated by host Kala Alexandre's board sponsor SUPCo. A bunch of other prizes were given by event and Mauli Ola's sponsors Da Hui, and event sponsors Quiksilver, Nixon and Volcom

The event was great as Makua, Gavin, Titus and everyone ripped on their performances, but the highlight to me was listening to the stories of the Cystic Fibrosis patients and their struggles to breath and the great work that the Mauli Ola performs in helping them live a better life. The foundation takes people with CF surfing and it so happens that breathing the sea air mist helps them with their breathing and it makes them feel better about themselves and having a "normal" day.

Now back to the raffle, when the drawing for the grand prize was announced I was stoked about having the winning ticket!!! Since I never win anything I was pretty stoked with the result but I decided on the spot to donate the board back to the cause. I walked up to Kala and told him what I wanted to do and just then another person with a winning ticket shows up! It just so happens that they somehow had two #60 tickets. Right away I told Kala to give the board to the other winner and everyone was stoked.
The thing is winning is more than just getting the Grand Prize, winning is about Mauli Ola's and other Foundations' work to help people that need help, especially for health related ailments. Seeing and hearing the CF people that attended tell their stories about how they live their lives and how they face and conquer their disease every day, that is winning! Winning is spending an evening with your friends and helping others.
Next time you feel sorry for yourself, take a deep breath and think of all the others that struggle everyday just to do take a breath or worse!
Mahalo Mauli Ola, Kala and all the people that attended for opening my eyes about what is important in life!
